Ramifications for Furnishing Alcohol to Minors: THERE ARE MANY

underage drinkingUnderage drinking and providing minors with alcohol (or the means to get alcohol) are crimes in the state of Pennsylvania, and there’s a lot more to them than you probably think. Police and prosecutors take these offenses seriously, and there’s much more at stake than a slap on the wrist.

WARNING TO MINORS:

You should know, it is a crime for minors to purchase, possess, or consume alcohol, punishable by up to 90 days in jail and/or a fine of up to $1000. If a minor attempts to lie about their age or uses a fake ID to obtain alcohol, that is another offense (or offenses) punishable by up to one year in prison and fines up to $500. In addition to fines, probation, and/or jail, conviction for any of these crimes will also cause you to lose your driver’s license – for 90 days the first time, one year for the second, and two years for each time after that.

WARNING TO PARENTS:

Parents, guardians, and other adults need to be aware that it is a crime to provide or sell alcohol to minors (punishable by up to one year imprisonment) or to create, sell or provide a minor with a fraudulent identification (punishable by up to two years in prison). Each of these offenses is also punished with a mandatory $1000 fine (the fine jumps to $2500 for each subsequent offense).

Depending on the circumstances of the case, adults who provide alcoho
